Help me sleep tonight, a song for "Remembrance Day", wrote this after looking through my Granddad's WW1 effects and medal ribbons. He served with the Royal Engineers in France and was invalided out after being wounded. The song focuses on the effect that war has on a child missing his Father ho is away fighting for his country overseas

Inch by Inch, A collaboration between Robin Redell and I, this one has taken some time to get off the mark. I asked Robin if I could try to put a tune to these words months ago but got sidetracked with another of his songs, finally started working on it a few weeks ago and after several attempts found a tune I was happy with. The words speak for themselves and are very relevant in these troubled times we live in....apologies for my poor French accent on the final outro !!!

"Plainsong" by John Renbourn. John was an absolute guitar hero of mine when I was young and starting out in blues and I spent hours trying to learn his songs , later I tried to develop my own style, but I still like to play some of these old pieces the way I learned them occasionally

cold, cold heart (Studio mix) Original song on piano that has been remixed with other instruments and effects by Darcy Jeavons which has breathed new life and added another dimension to my original piano and vocal. Words and music by Pat Collard Piano and Vocal by Pat Collard All other instruments and remixing by Darcy Jeavons Musical production by Darcy Jeavons Video made by Pat Collard from clips downloaded from Vimeo Lyrics Cold, cold heart Another day, another day when I don`t miss you, Another hour I don`t spend thinking about you, But I`m not fooling anyone pretending that it`s true, What else can I do? I`m still missing you. And every day that we`re apart, Is like Winter in this cold, cold heart. Another night lying here awake, Since you`ve been gone it seems there`s just some habits I can`t break, And even when I fall asleep I just dream of you, What else can I do? I`m still missing you, And every day that we`re apart, Is like Winter in this cold, cold heart. Middle 8 Everything has changed now, nothing`s quite the same, There`s no laughter in this house just the echoes that remain, No warmth, no comfort, nothing good since we`re apart, Just Winter in this cold, cold heart, Instrumental bridge Repeat middle 8 Another year, another year has come and gone, The Seasons change but has it really been that long, I know that life goes on the same no matter what I do, I`m still missing you, I`m still missing you, And every day that we`re apart, Is like Winter in this cold, cold heart.

Hometown Memories (live)..have some happy and not so happy childhood memories, this song reflects my recollection of my early childhood and my hometown of sheerness, Kent.....and also the longing for a Mother I never knew until I was 11. HOMETOWN MEMORIES Just a boy with the wind in his hair in an open field, Chasing a butterfly, doing cartwheels, Stealing the apples off somebody's tree, That's the way I always like to remember me. Just a sleepy seaside town full of quiet streets, And a shop selling souvenirs to an empty beach, Growing old like the fishermen looking out to sea, But I still see it like it always used to be. And a house that somehow never caught the light, Where the sounds in the dark kept me awake at night, There on my own it always frightened me, That's the way it always seems in my memory. Middle eight: And in the night when thoughts turned into dreams, Sometimes I heard my Mother call, But dreams and make believe we're all I ever had, My Father never spoke of her at all. Just a man with sadness written in his eyes, Wrapped in the failures of his broken life, Hair turning grey and growing thin, That's the way I always seem to remember him. Instrumental bridge/Middle eight Just a boy with the wind in his hair in an open field, Chasing a butterfly, doing cartwheels, Stealing the apples off somebody's tree, That's the way I always like to remember me.

Old Man, An early song I wrote back in 1977...I was persuaded to resurrect it by my very good friend John Lunn. I got the original idea from an old house that I used to pass most days in the Village where I still live, and tho` I never saw any signs of life inside I figured it had some stories to tell. Sadly the house no longer stands and has made way for more modern accommodation. I decided against trying to rewrite the lyrics and have left it as it was written just added some harmony and a second guitar part OLD MAN Unreal like the figure in some photograph The old house stands alone against the night, Like and aging tombstone with no epitaph, Cold and grey, forgotten by the light, And thru the boarded windows from where I stand I can see across the empty wooden floor, And inside stirs a shadow and the shadow is a man, Forgotten by the world outside his door. Bridge : Old man why have you locked yourself away? Are you afraid to open up your windows to the day? Old man have you seen it all before? Old man have you seen it all before? And tho` he`s old and frail within his frame, His eyes reflect the youth inside his mind, For he has lived a lifetime, now he lives it once again Back down thru the corridors of time, A letter and a photograph both spoiled with age, Corroding trophies of the past, But now the story`s older time to turn another page, The final chapter now approaching fast. 2nd Bridge : Old man what do you see in your photograph? First I hear you cry and then I hear you laugh, Old man you cry just like a child, Old man you laugh just like a child. As I pass the house that hides your broken form, Where dusk and dawn pass by unseen, I wonder if my pity isn`t really scorn For the world that you have found inside your dream. Repeat first Bridge.

The Stranger Song, Probably still my favourite Leonard Cohen song, full of enigmatic imagery. I have... read more tried to put my own interpretation on it, but Len`s original will always remain the benchmark ..............................................................................................................."Stranger Song" It's true that all the men you knew were dealers who said they were through with dealing Every time you gave them shelter I know that kind of man It's hard to hold the hand of anyone who is reaching for the sky just to surrender, who is reaching for the sky just to surrender. And then sweeping up the jokers that he left behind you find he did not leave you very much not even laughter Like any dealer he was watching for the card that is so high and wild he'll never need to deal another He was just some Joseph looking for a manger He was just some Joseph looking for a manger And then leaning on your window sill he'll say one day you caused his will to weaken with your love and warmth and shelter And then taking from his wallet an old schedule of trains, he'll say I told you when I came I was a stranger I told you when I came I was a stranger. But now another stranger seems to want you to ignore his dreams as though they were the burden of some other O you've seen that man before his golden arm dispatching cards but now it's rusted from the elbows to the finger And he wants to trade the game he plays for shelter Yes he wants to trade the game he knows for shelter. Ah you hate to see another tired man lay down his hand like he was giving up the holy game of poker And while he talks his dreams to sleep you notice there's a highway that is curling up like smoke above his shoulder. It is curling just like smoke above his shoulder. You tell him to come in sit down but something makes you turn around The door is open you can't close your shelter You try the handle of the road It opens do not be afraid It's you my love, you who are the stranger It's you my love, you who are the stranger. Well, I've been waiting, I was sure we'd meet between the trains we're waiting for I think it's time to board another Please understand, I never had a secret chart to get me to the heart of this or any other matter When he talks like this you don't know what he's after When he speaks like this, you don't know what he's after. Let's meet tomorrow if you choose upon the shore, beneath the bridge that they are building on some endless river Then he leaves the platform for the sleeping car that's warm You realize, he's only advertising one more shelter And it comes to you, he never was a stranger And you say ok the bridge or someplace later. And then sweeping up the jokers that he left behind ... And leaning on your window sill ... I told you when I came I was a stranger.

Land of my Fathers, A subject very close to my heart...and Big thank you to Robin Rendell for bringing it to life. Originally inspired by the Welsh historical novels of Alexander Cordell ...I wrote these words but only recently finished them after the Gleison mining tragedy...I couldn`t find a tune that worked so I left it as a poem and just added some simple strings behind the words. I have my good friend Robin Redell to thank for such a fine job with the narration. Here`s a proud and savage land where our Fathers grew, This sweet and bitter earth where Rebecca flew, Here the scars are healing still in spite of you, And always will no matter what you do. Here the ruins of Merthyr and Nantyglo, Here the ghosts of all the men who made the iron flow, Who gave their eyes and souls to the furnace glow, The empty sleeves tied up with string all they had to show. Beneath these ravaged hills the narrow galleries, Where so many men have toiled and died for centuries, In stalls too low to stand they hew the coal upon their knees, And give their lungs to dust to feed their families. And in this land of legend where the dragon proudly flies, Where "Land of my Fathers" stirs the fire behind the eyes, The earth still bleeds the coalface claims another prize, As a Nation mourns the passing of more wasted lives.

Brandy`s Rag, A little slow Ragtime song I wrote many years ago for my poor long suffering dog "Brandy" (sadly gone now to doggy heaven !)....who shared many a night curled up on the sofa next to me as I ploughed thru the small hours playing my guitar !! LYRICS You wander thru this old house and I can`t help but smile, You move along so slowly then settle for a while, Your big brown eyes so sorrowful yet I know that you`re not sad, You really are.....the best friend a man ever had. What do you Dream about when you sleep at night?, Do you think of holes to dig or cats that you can fight?, You could never make me sad, Even though sometimes you`re bad. I wonder what goes on in your World and how do you feel right now, As you lie here by my side trying to sleep somehow, Cos` it`s four oclock in the morning and I`m still writing your song, But you don`t cry and you don`t sigh at being awake for so long.

Arthur (The strength in you)- Orchestral version. I wrote this song some years ago for my great friend of more than 40 years, JOHN LUNN, after his Father passed away....I always thought that the original was lacking something so I have re-recorded the song and added strings to the piano after the first verse to reinforce the vocal....This is the first time I have openly revealed who I wrote the song for but many of you will know John for his many kind and encouraging comments...I feel privileged to have had him as a friend all these long years and his patience and objective criticism at times has made me a much better song writer ...songs like this are difficult to write and often fail because we try too hard ....this one just wrote itself and I was pleased to be able to offer some small solace to a true friend at a very sad time ....

FREEDOM..A true collaboration with Yvalain...I`ve had these words for some time but couldn`t find a tune that worked until I started working with Yves who supplied this great melody, I sent him my guitar and vocal track and over the next week he transformed the tune into this masterpiece of orchestration and arrangement. Lyrics, acoustic guitar and vocals: Pat Collard Original music, arrangement, Production and all other instruments (oboe, violin, flute, cello, drums, bass, organ, all digitally produced): Yves Alain Debodinance FREEDOM Up here in the hills the fighting`s started once again, But no shouts of Glory here among this weary band of men, Just the struggle to survive, another night, another prayer, Each one of us a prisoner to the fear that`s always there. Down below us in the village where my wife and children sleep, No moon betrays the shadow of the figure on the street, And with patience borne of hate and revenge for the oppressed, Leaves the blood of the informer as a warning to the rest. Up here in the hills we are moving once again, There is danger if you stay too long and so few of us remain, So we melt into the night and cover every trace, And gather sometime later in another hiding place. Bridge: And I`m tired, so tired of War, My body aches, my nerves are raw, I long for peace just for one night, Go back home see my wife and hold her tight. There are some who call us Rebels and the reason for the wars, There are those who call us Heroes and Martyrs to the cause, But after years of Tyranny in our homes and on the street, We would rather die for freedom than be shackled by defeat. Last night we set the ambush and the victory was sweet, Until the reinforcements came and cut off our retreat, They cut us down in seconds our bodies fell like wheat, All my comrades lay about me, scattered in the street. Up here in the hills the movements growing once again, The revolution`s coming and someday we will win, Then we will come down from these hills to our families and friends, Build a future for our children where men are equal and the same.

Right between the eyes..A lesser known Graham Nash song I first heard from a musician friend I met some 40 odd years ago through my friendship with John Lunn ! He was a very talented and gifted guitarist and also a mean piano player and I spent many happy times with him and his family at times when I was visiting JL. His Parents were Irish and music was a family event at the Doogan`s and I have fond memories of Mr and Mrs Doogan dancing while Dennis played Irish Jigs, and later we would jam well into the morning ….Sadly Dennis and his Mum and Dad are no longer with us I won`t go into details but Dennis was just 38 when he took his final bow and I miss him very much, both as a musician and a friend. It was in Bristol where me and John were living at the time that Den and his Brother Johhny and some friends decided to drop in on us and we had an impromptu music party and what a great night we had…it was the last time I saw Den alive but fortunately John decided to put the recorder on and we have an hour or so of music and banter from what we now call Den`s last party….this is one of the songs from that night, I can`t sing it as well as Dennis but I tried to do it the best I could for his memory. "There for you", Original song I`ve been working on for a friend who`s husband has recently undergone treatment for cancer...it`s a very raw take just me and the piano but I thought in view of recent events a song of hope might be in order....I sing this also for my Sister-in-law Julie who lost her battle with cancer but never stopped fighting

Freight train Blues, The very first finger-picking piece I ever learnt on guitar...was 11 or 12 when I seen a guy playing this in a music shop, I was mesmerized..He showed me how to play it...took about 6 weeks before I got it right..and there my journey began..50 years ago ! Thank you Elizabeth Cotton

"Drown in my own tears", my first serious attempt at this classic Ray Charles song. One of my all time idols..got the idea after listening to Dr John demonstrating Ray`s piano style. I hope I`ve managed to capture just a little of the great mans piano style on the guitar

"Buddy can you spare a dime", tried to keep it simple just me and the acoustic. A song about the Great American Depression in the 30s written by Jay Gorney and Yip Harburg. recorded by Al Jolson and also Bing Crosby it became a bit of an anthem for those hard times. I first heard itwhile I was a boy looking thru some old 78s of my Grans it was sung by a man whose name I can`t remember now (it was 50 years ago !) but he was called "The Velvet voice" and Ijust loved the song. Of coarse it`s been covered lots of times since, I have recordings by Peter, Paul and Mary and Judy Collins but have also heard Martin Simpson do it...Don`t put myself in their league of coarse but tried to do it justice.

Dark Skies When the dark skies come, As the clock runs down on the dying Sun, When the Earth is scorched and the Seas are gone, Will we still be making wars, For those behind the Temple doors ? And when the Sun sets on this barren land, When the rivers have returned to sand, And the pyramids no longer stand, When the last man stands alone, Will he weep for what has gone ? Will the greedy men and the old regime, Remember when the Earth was green, When the forests breathed and the air was clean, And will they even learn, As they watch the last tree burn ? Will our children learn in years to come, When the Arctic melts and the oil is gone, To repair the damage that we`ve done, Or find some other way, To burn the last of the sky away ? Or will we leave this world of ours, And someday leave our seed on mars, And sail between the endless Stars, Or will we still be making Wars, For those behind the Temple doors ?

Land of my Fathers Here`s a proud and savage land Where our Fathers grew, This sweet and bitter earth Where Rebbeca flew, Here the scars are healing still In spite of you, And always will No matter what you do. Here the ruins of Merthyr And Nantyglo, Here the ghosts of all the men Who made the iron flow, Who gave their eyes and souls To the furnace glow, The empty sleeves tied up with string, All they had to show. Beneath these ravaged hills The narrow galleries, Where so many men have toiled And died for centuries, In stalls too low to stand They hewed the coal upon their knees, And gave their lungs to dust To feed their families. And in this land of Legend Where the Dragon proudly flies, Where "Land of my Fathers" Stirs the fire behind the eyes, The earth still bleeds, The coalface claims another prize, As a Nation mourns the passing Of more wasted lives.
