What was the first concert you ever went to?
My dad took me to see EP Symphony a couple of older students in my teacher's studio were playing concertos. I was about five years old. A few years later they took me to see Juan Torres, organist, at El Paso Civic Center I was memorized by the music and his small orchestra. I was especially hooked when I heard his version of "La Bikina" it was magical. Must have been in the fourth grade when this happened.
What gear do you use?
Currently I use a Roland RD700NX, and Yamaha S90EX and MX 61 for most gigs. I have some vintage synths (D-70, K2000) a pair of proteus modules, a korg M3r, two K2600's a K2500, several Maudio controllers of varied sizes. I have two full PA systems with lighting, and this past year decided to work on my guitar chops purchased an Epiphone Les Paul and Ampeg 212 amp. Enjoying my practice time on the guitar.
What are you looking for from Fandalism?
Thanks for the promotion. I love sharing my performances and also listen to others, especially the ones that take time to listen to me. I've been an educator the past 23 years, teaching college music all levels and genres. Going to retire very soon from that forum and want to concentrate on writing, performing and recording. I'm available for hire.
Who was your biggest musical influence growing up?
Too many to name. My Dad and mom definitely for always pushing all sorts of music on me. Pianists Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans. Post Coltrane pianists Herbie, Chick, Tyner and Keith Jarrett. Later , in college I b elieve, swept away by cuban and other latin pianist such as Chucho Valdez, Gonzalo Rubalcaba (My absolute favorite at this moment), and Michel Camilo.
Are you in a band? Have you been in bands?
I have a septet that performs Latin jazz, Have three cd's and one DVD with the group Latin Jazz Exchange. I accompany a the Young El Paso Singers, and Danzas Espanolas, a flamenco Spanish classical dance company. I play reglarly with Marty Olivas and Case Closed Jazz, and with a classic Rock, Soul variety group called Souled Out. Message me in El Paso would love to see you out at one of my gigs!
If you could jam with anyone, who would it be?
I like to jam with peanut butter. I'd love to play duets with Gonzalo Rubalcaba although I would not even feel the least secure about sitting down with him. He's great. Historically Miles Davis would have been a dream come true.
What's the biggest audience you ever performed to? What's the smallest?
Played Star Spangled banner for 50,000 Wildcat stadium ASU. Also Music Under the Stars for over 10,000 people. Smallest is when I play by myself.
You're stuck on a desert island and only get to bring one album with you. What do you pick?
hmmm Album? Really? Why not an ipod? Loaded with thousands of jazz, mainly bebop, and classic rock, mainly 70's, music. Hopefully have some kind of solar charger until they rescue me.
